Places I’ll Never Forget (Hopefully !) #3

These photographs are from my first visit to the island of Crete in 1990, can’t believe that’s 27 years ago !!!! All the images are from an Olympus OM2n film camera which I had just bought before the holiday. The film is Fujichrome 100.

One of the main reasons to visit Crete was to walk the Samaria Gorge (click the link if you would like to find out more)

It was quite rough going in some parts of the gorge.

End of The Line – Agia Roumeli

It was a scorching hot day, I was glad when we reached Agia Roumeli so we could have a drink and a bite to eat, not to mention resting my feet. We caught the ferry from here back to the transport. I’m not very good on boats especially the flat bottomed variety, the Mediterranean can get quite choppy and it did, but it was an experience not to be missed.

Thank you, I’m really glad the old slides have kept their colours. Liking your fullspectra images a lot. Used to shoot infrared quite a bit, contemplating getting an IR converted camera. :>)

Oh wow, I’m so glad you posted this. I spent the best month (or so) of my life on Crete with my Peugeot 504 and another car-full of friends. We slept on beaches every night and travelled up and down and left and right. The night before doing the Samaria Gorge we spent on that same pier where the ferry leaves you on return. It was nice of them to drop me off in our living room. 😀 I did the gorge in low All-Stars starting with socks, ending without, suffering throughout. We were eight but walked all at own pace. I walked for about 8 hours. I had no snacks, except a Greek honey nut bar that saved my life. 😀 Luckily there was always enough running water. And it was August!! When the trek ended in that rather ugly town with those cement constructs blocking the waves, I was looking forward to a nice big juicy fruit salad, but instead got only a few apples and oranges and one grape in it. Still, it was memorable, as was entire Crete. Now I’m in south Tuscany, things are similar and I have my eternal August.

Thank you, glad it brought back those memories for you. You did well if you did the walk in August, it must have been really hot, it was the boat trip from the gorge I really didn’t like very much, the sea was really rough and the boat was very crowded. I really enjoyed Crete especially the historical sites. :>)

It was a school trip to Germany in 1966 (giving my age away) that put me off , a force 8 gale and the stabilisers had broken, wasn’t sick but lost my sense of balance. :>(
