5 Days of Grey

That’s the BBC weather forecast for my part of the UK, so I thought I would cheer myself up by posting some photographs from summer 2016 in Latvia.

Hopefully I will be going back to Latvia in June to visit my lovely relatives.

Box of Slides

Spent the day indoors again today, the weather has not been good for photography. So with all good intentions I thought I would make a list of the stuff needed to reinstate the spare bedroom back into a darkroom. Of course I got distracted ! One of the distractions was a box of slides, I couldn’t resist scanning a few of them.

Culloden Tower, near Ripon North Yorkshire

This image brought back memories, I think it was about 1989 when I took this photo, testing out a Carl Zeiss Jena 35-135mm Lens, quite a good lens optically but not that good mechanically.

These were taken around 1990 on 3M  Scotch 1000 asa slide film made by Ferrania, lovely and grainy which give them an old world feel, though I suppose they are pretty old now anyway.

Last few from Latvia visit

I was hoping to post some images from my replacement Olympus OM40 that I bought a couple of months ago, I scanned the negs and when I opened them in Photoshop there were dust specs all over them. I am a man of patience but… so I will re-scan them later in the week.

So here are the last images from my Latvia visit.

Can’t wait for my next visit.

Searching for software

While looking for some old software today I came across a CD labeled 02-02 Spurn Head, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spurn then it all came back to me. I remember I was getting a bit stir crazy and needed to get out on the road, Spurn Head Yorkshire seemed an interesting place so off I set on a very foggy Sunday morning, only 145 miles(233 km)

Within 5 miles of Spurn Head amazingly the fog cleared, and the sun came out. The photo’s were taken on my Olympus OM2n with 135mm and 24mm Zuiko lenses on Kodak Ektachrome 200asa, I really miss that film stock.

Latvian Ethnographic Open Air Museum

Just on the edge of Riga is the Ethnographic Museum, I first visited the site in 1993, at that time it was just getting started so it was really good to go back and see how it has come along. They have lots of exhibitions, festivals, and craft fairs throughout the year, not to mention an excellent shop/cafe that sells lovely food and Latvian beer.

Here are a few photographs from the museum site, as usual could have spent a lot longer looking around.

While we were waiting for my relatives at the end of our visit this lovely affectionate cat came and sat by us demanding lots of fuss, a great way to end our day.

Riga Central Market

The market in my hometown (Leicester) is quite big and has been around for about 700 years. Riga central market on the other hand was opened in 1930, having been built in and around disused Zeppelin hangers.  It is enormous and a fantastic place to visit.

The shutter button on the Olympus XA is very sensitive and it’s easy to take an inadvertent shot, but I liked the way this one turned out.
